Balancing on a hyphen
Born in the United States to Cuban parents, Omar Vega has dedicated his life to navigating the complex space between these two rich cultures. Early on, he learned to blend in, often feeling as though he was turning away from his heritage. A transformative journey to Cuba in 2016, traveling from Havana to Trinidad, enabled Omar to reconnect with his roots. Through his camera, he captured the vibrant stories and daily lives of Cubans, deepening his understanding of identity and community. This experience inspired a meaningful evolution in his art, including works like "See Me," which was exhibited in the "Speak Up" show at the Piano Craft Gallery, and his ongoing project "Shameless," which seeks to de-stigmatize shame and foster openness. Through his photography, Omar invites viewers to reflect on their own identities and the shared narratives that unite us all.
